MADRID

Sometimes certain cities are less popular then others but when I visit them I get a completely different image. Madrid is certainly one of those cities that I have underestimated previously. Now I consider Madrid as one of the top destinations as it offers a lot. You must definitely add at least a 2 night stop whenever you’re visiting Spain or Portugal. Combine a stay in Madrid with Barcelona, Andalucia or Lisbon and Porto. Madrid entertained me with its museums, shops, cafes, shows and nightlife.

what to do?

day 1

My stay was close to Gran Via and I almost spent walking my whole stay in the city. Two of the major squares are next to each other and offer you the central beat of the city. It is Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor. I would say that these are majorly the main areas where they take you everywhere. However, on my day of arrival I always walk around but I don’t exhaust myself with much of sight visiting. I like to be more focused when seeing a museum or visiting a landmark. Next to these squares, I visited a local market. It’s not a traditional old one but it is rather an upscale of a food hall with numerous shops to choose many types of local food. Personally, I didn’t like it a lot because it was the holidays and packed with visitors. I like to enjoy my food and have proper meal rather than eating while standing. I ended my walk at Retiro Park.

day 2

Today I was fresh and ready to enjoy the Museo Nacional Reina Sofia and take the opportunity to admire the  masterpieces existing for Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. I visited Palacio de Cibeles that was the headquarters of Spain's postal service where you can still spot the traditional brass letterboxes embedded in the wall. When I was done for my major points of interests I went to Gran Via for some shopping. It also becomes interesting at night because it has a lot of restaurants and pubs.

day 3

Before I left this beautiful city, I went to Plaza d’Espagna and walked next to the huge Palacio Real. After that, I went to look for the cathedral of Santa Maria.
